You start as a Candidate School and the evidence assembles as you run, out of the records you already keep.

One week

She chooses what each class learns from the library, here, and downloads it. Her teachers learn to teach it in Ask, in their own language, on their own phones. The class runs. Attendance, the daily note and the photographs go into Beacon on a phone at the door. Her parents see their child's day in Beacon, and when a parent wants to understand what her child is doing in the empathy lesson, she can ask Ask herself. A parent who found the school through the page Enrol built for her arrives as an enquiry, becomes an enrolment in Beacon, and is counted. All of it, quietly, becomes the evidence her school needs to move from Candidate School to accredited.

Ask is available now. Beacon and Enrol are in development, and the parent app for Beacon is not built yet.

What your teachers and parents get

For teachers

In most small preschools a teacher gets a photocopied plan and whatever the owner can teach her between classes. Here every teacher has the curriculum on her phone, in her language, and something that will answer her question at ten at night when she is worried about tomorrow. It trains her through her first term rather than expecting her to already know.

For parents

A parent at a small preschool usually gets a message and a photograph. Here she sees her child's day, and she can ask about the curriculum herself, in her own language, at any hour. She is not sold a report on her child, and she is never told what her child feels.

Ask a teacher's most natural question, what is this child feeling, and Ask declines, and hands back questions to ask the child instead. Most education AI is built to produce an answer. This one is built to withhold the answer that would be most satisfying and least true.

Teaching was never the hard part

A woman who is good with children can teach. What stops her is everything around it. What to teach on Monday. Who has paid and who has not. How to fill the places. How to keep records that a regulator will accept. How to train the second teacher when the class grows. Most people who could run a preschool never start one, and the reason is almost never the children.

Start where you are

In your home. In a rented room. In a garden, or under trees. A preschool is a small number of children in a safe space with an adult who knows what she is doing, and the building is the part people overestimate. Rules about premises differ by country and by region, and meeting them is yours to do.

Training, the curriculum and Ask are available now and running in classrooms. Beacon and Enrol are in development. An operator who starts now begins with the teaching and receives the rest as it arrives. We would rather tell you that than tell you everything is finished.

Setting up is free and fully supported. Payment begins when the school is running and earning, as a fee for each enrolled child.

Where this came from

Empathy School Bali opened in 2020 and the curriculum was written and tested there with children every day since. The preschool and kindergarten have run a waitlist continuously.

Every month someone writes to ask how to build a school like it, from the United States, Thailand, Japan, Korea and South Africa. More than ten have said they want to open their own.
